Following the South Way crash on 20th Feb 2008 at the top of Newhaven’s ring road, David Rogers raised the safety issues with East Sussex County Council. The 3 year casualty record for South Way shows there have been 6 crashes involving personal injury during this period. None of the crashes involved pedestrians walking on the footway adjoining South Way and being hit by a vehicle.
Cllr. Rogers said: “I also asked about the possibility of guard railings being installed – but the experts say this would not stop a car or lorry from mounting a footway. I’m still very concerned about the dangers to pedestrians along here, including those walking to Grays or Southdown schools, and shall continue to monitor what might be done.”
